The combination of basketry and lacquer had been in use for thousands of years. It is speculated that the lacquering of baskets to make them waterproof is one of the oldest practices. Both the production of basketry with lacquer panels and lacquering the bamboo strips so that they can be woven into patterns, remain essentially unchanged in China since ancient times.
